HABS/HAER DOCUMENTATION PROJECTS

I produced all the measured drawings on the projects immediately below from 1989 to present. (Those completed between 1979 and 1989 while I was employed at HAER appear further down the list.) If projects below have been transmitted to the Library of Congress, where HABS/HAER projects are archived and served to the public, you should be able to view the drawings, large-format photographs and historical reports ("data pages") on-line by going to:

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html

for the Library of Congress's "American Memory Project." Select the Architectural/Landscape Collections, and type in the desired project name, HAER number or HABS number into the page's "Search" box. The requested HABS or HAER project should appear quickly.

I plan to provide active links to these materials later, or serve copies of the drawings directly from my web site here.

PUBLICATIONS (writing and technical illustration)

2005-06"Invented Here: An Industrial Archeological Investigation of the Model T Experimental Room and Associated Spaces at Henry Ford's Piquette Avenue Plant." I prepared this 145-page color report for the Model T Automotive Heritage Complex, Inc., 140 Edison Avenue, Detroit Michigan48202-1559. This report synthesizes documentary research at the Benson Ford Research Center (The Henry Ford) and field investigation at the Piquette Avenue Plant. It includes 111 CAD drawings, photographs and historical illustrations documenting and analyzing site and historical data to derive the locations and appearances of long-demolished historic offices and shops, especially the "special room" where the Model T automobile was designed and its prototypes built. Also included are Henry Ford's office, offices of his principal officers, a large company drafting room, and various erection stands, workbenches and furnishings used in the manufacturing spaces.
2004-05Irondale Furnace 1870 Site Plan - How the Site Plan Was Derived, Mountain Brook, AL. This 15-page color report explains and illustrates how a predictive archeological site plan was derived for the Irondale Furnace Site from a series of four historical photographs and a 3D CAD model. The site plan was intended to serve as a basis for a long-range archeological conservation plan for this highly significant Birmingham-area industrial site.
2001-02Turkey Creek Preserve Cultural Resource Mapping Project (June 2002). I prepared an extensive, illustrated, footnoted report for the Jefferson County Office of Land Development to document early industrial uses of land within the proposed Turkey Creek Preserve in Pinson, Alabama. In addition, I prepared an extensive map (in CAD) compiled from current topographic and geographic data, historic sources, and archaeological and mineral site examinations. Numerous maps and photos were included. The report and map were published and bound by the Birmingham Historical Society for deposit at various institutions.
1997-99HABS/HAER Guidelines for Recording Historic Sites and Structures Using Computer-aided Design (CAD) (May 1997). I was asked to write these guidelines due to my previous experience writing guidelines and my use of CAD in documentary work. A very abbreviated condensation of these standards is available at the HABS/HAER/HALS website.
1994-95Complete revision of HABS/HAER, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, HAER Field Instructions as "Recording Historic Structures & Sites for the Historic American Engineering Record."
1994HABS/HAER, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, Guidelines for Recording Historic Ships. Washington, DC: 1988. 2nd edition revisions and typesetting. This was revised in 2004 by Todd A. Croteau of the HAER office and made into a PDF for on-line distribution. Some sections on the use of digital theodolotes and 3D scanners were incorporated, as well as some more recent drawing samples.
1992-93Emory L. Kemp, ed., Industrial Archaeology: Techniques. Melbourne, FL: Krieger Publishing Company, 1996. I wrote and illustrated Chapter 9, Field Work and Measured Drawings, for this university-level textbook.
1989John Burns, ed., Recording Historic Structures. Washington, DC: The American Institute of Architects Press, 1989. I wrote sections in this book on interpretive drawings, recording historic industrial processes, and recording historic ships. Numerous measured drawings wholly or partially done by myself were included in this publication.
1988,1994HABS/HAER, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, Guidelines for Recording Historic Ships. Washington, DC: 1988. I was this book's principal author and illustrator; it covers documentation of historic ships to HABS/HAER standards via written materials, large-format photography and measured drawings. I revised it in 1994 at the request of HAER and the Council of American Maritime Museums (CAMM) for republication by CAMM. In 2004 It received a third update by Todd A. Croteau of HAER (see above).
1981HABS/HAER, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, HAER Field Instructions Washington, DC: 1981. I was principal reviser and co-author of this volume, the HAER program's basic manual for documenting historic industrial sites to HABS/HAER standards.
